Growing from one Sunday in 2010 to every other month in 2019, CicLAvia has covered 226 miles —and growing. Averaging 43.5 acres, each route is 7 times larger than LA’s median size public park . More than 1.85 million people have participated in 35 CicLAvia open streets, averaging 53,000 each. People come from both host neighborhoods—and from all over LA—to explore LA together. They are split among new, repeat and die-hard fans. Key to CicLAvia’s success is it happens with neighborhoods, not to neighborhoods. Planning starts with community dialogue, and hundreds of volunteers work alongside public safety workers.

Inspired by the ciclovía events that started 45 years ago in Bogotá, Colombia, the first CicLAvia was held on October 10, 2010.
Instead of building permanent infrastructure, CicLAvia builds a unifying social fabric connecting neighborhoods and neighbors to each other through a spirit of play. CicLAvia routes have spanned 226 miles of open streets across LA County—and growing. Each route is 6-8 times larger than the median size of LA’s existing public parks.
By moving routes around LA every other month, CicLAvia creates greater equity for LA’s most park-poor communities— extending its reach and impact beyond any one community.

CicLAvia’s participants mirror LA’s demographics. They come from 75% of City of LA’s zip codes—and 50% of LA County’s zip codes. In a region that has at times struggled for harmony, CicLAvia has created a joyous, shared urban forum.
Metro ridership increases 30% during CicLAvia, with some riders taking trains and buses for the first time. CicLAvia’s success has resulted in Metro sponsoring open streets throughout LA County.
By design, CicLAvia routes traverse the centerpiece boulevards that distinguish LA’s many, unique neighborhoods.
CicLAvia is about more than just bikes. It’s about all kinds of shared activities, even in the middle of the street.
Each route is punctuated by hubs that turn intersections into recreation and rest areas, where people can find fresh water, food, entertainment, bike repairs, first aid and conversation.
The joy is palpable, and a smile is the coin of CicLAvia’s realm.
